A surprise performance

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Last evening Spicy Salsa had the pleasure of a performance by Jimmy Rumba’s Atlanta Latin dance group. They were preparing for the upcoming Memphis Salsa Convention. If you were there, you know what I mean when I say Jimmy’s group is hot!

The pictures from the night, and the performance are available for your viewing pleasure. Stay tuned as we have more performances scheduled to come.

Our next performance will be by “Salsa, Sabor y Ritmo” on October 1st. The director is Gonzalo Miyagui and their style is casino salsa. Be sure not to miss it.

Why I Started Spicy Salsa

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

So I was thinking that you guys probably wanted to know more about us, Spicy Salsa, and where we came from. We’re no overnight cinderella story, we’ve been doing this for a while and trying hard to get to where we are now. So here’s a little rundown of where Spicy Salsa is comin’ from.

It started about two years ago when I became a regular patron of Salsa Sabrosa. Salsa Sabrosa was run by Christine Gingrich at Tasty World. Popular mainly with a small dance crowd in Athens, the night had regular people coming but it had a relatively small attendance. Christine decided to move to Mexico and handed over the night responsibilities to me when she left. I began teaching and running the night, at first at tasty World and then the night bounced around several locations including Buddha Bar, 346, and Little Kings. After moving a while the night finally found home at the Ritz. I invited Blake Tyers in the midst of all the moving to join me as a teacher. Together in August of 2005, we decided we needed to come up with a name and an image for our salsa night… we wanted to make sure we stood out in the crowd and that you guys knew that Spicy Salsa is dedicated to bringing you the best we can offer. So some brainstorming, a little blood, sweat, tears, and one facebook group later - we’re here. We’re just doing our best to keep Wednesday on your calendar and keep your feet moving.

I personally want to thank all you guys for coming out and having fun every week with me… after all you guys spice up my life. Keep coming out, introduce yourself to me, and above all - have fun. I do what I do because I love dancing and I love the smiles week after week. See you guys on the dance floor.
